UCSF Currently has over 100 Windows NT domains supporting users distributed across all city and state
wide UCSF locations. These independent workgroups suffer, as does the university as a whole, from a limited
ability to share resources. These resources, such as users information, data, printers, etc., are connected only
marginally through elaborate measures that are time and labor intensive and difficult to manage. Windows 2000
presents an opportunity to simplify this environment and to offer centralization of resources through a shared
directory structure. There is strong agreement that the migration from Windows NT4 to Windows 2000 is a priority
at UCSF and as such the necessary steps are:
- Assess campus Windows computing environment and analyze feasibility of migrating to Windows 2000.
- Create a high level Windows 2000/ Active Directory design and seek campus-wide agreement and participation.
- Establish a Windows 2000 Enterprise Administration to manage the Windows migration and ongoing operations.
- Plan a DNS and Active Directory Site Design.
- Create a test environment to pilot DNS and Active Directory Site design.
- Establish a centralized "root" domain that will serve as the host for all local campus domains.
- Establish a tiered migration plan that allows for phased migration of campus departments.
- Establish long term plans for managing the Windows 2000 infrastructure that includes:
- Centralizing IT and organizational resources
- Exploring shared application opportunities
- Exploiting the possibilities of integrating Active Directory with other campus-wide directory services.
The project overview provides a high level view of the main issues that exist in the current Windows NT and
workgroup-based computing environments, the problems associated, and the potential solutions and benefits realized
by migrating these environments to a shared Windows 2000 network.

5. Key Milestones and Deliverables
The primary milestones and deliverables of the Campus Active Directory Project are:
6. Project Status
Project status will be posted at the beginning of each quarter at:
www.ucsf.edu/its/windows2000/status.html
7. Project Resources
The following resources will available to help departments understand
the full scope and details of Windows 2000, Active Directory, and related
technologies. These sites will be available the week of April 23.

8. Next Steps
- Develop 2-5 year Windows 2000 plan.
- Plan ongoing consolidation of domain and organizational structure
- Explore the possibilities of integrating Active Directory with other
LDAP-based campus directory services.
- Explore possibility of consolidated Windows-based IT Support Services.
- Explore possibility of Active Directory integrated messaging services.
- Research and evaluate MS Exchange Conferencing Services.
More details will be added to these topic areas as research and planning
progresses.
