Configure Firewalls to work with UCSF VPN

After downloading and installing Virtual Private Network (VPN), you might need to configure your computer or network if your Internet connection is protected by a hardware or software firewall. If you're not familiar with firewalls, see Set up a firewall.

To complete this configuration, you need to identify your firewall, then configure it accordingly.

Identifying Your Firewall

To determine what firewall is in place on your system, see Set up a firewall.

After identifying your firewall, if it appears in the list below, follow the instructions provided to configure it to work with UCSF VPN. If it doesn't appear in the list below, follow the instructions for All Other Firewalls.

Configuring Popular Software Firewalls for UCSF VPN

All Other Firewalls

Because there are hundreds of different firewalls, it is difficult for UCSF to support them all. We provide instructions for many popular software firewalls, but we cannot guarantee that we'll know how to configure one not listed above to work with UCSF VPN. We suggest that you review the user manual or online help for your firewall or contact the vendor of your firewall for instructions on configuring it to permit VPN applications to work with it. If you still need help, see Resolve Problems with VPN.

2Wire, Linksys, or Netgear DSL Routers

Most DSL routers work with VPN, but some need special configuration. If you have a home network which includes a DSL router such as 2Wire, Linksys, or Netgear DSL routers, contact the vendor of your router or your ISP for instructions on configuring it to permit VPN applications to work with it.

Don't Disable Your Firewall Completely

Do not disable your firewall just so that you can get VPN to work. This is akin to leaving the front door of your house unlocked and standing wide open while you read a book in the back yard -- anyone observant enough can simply walk right in. The most ideal configuration permits VPN to work while continuing to provide all the firewall protection you had before you installed VPN.

After Configuring Your Firewall

After configuring your firewall to work with VPN, you can begin to use it. See How to Use VPN.
